Tara Chace of QUEEN & COUNTRY Commission

Hi all! Here's the first of my new commissions, featuring Tara Chace of Queen & Country. I wanted to do something other than the standard shot of her standing with a gun and looking fierce. Instead, I chose to utilize a more intimate setting, and attempted to tell a story with one big panel. I hope the client will enjoy it. I had a great time working on it. If you're interested in getting a commission from me, my list is still open. Write to me at graphitemonkey@yahoo for rates and details. Stay tuned here---I'll be posting more commissioned artwork as I finish it.
Thank you and Happy Holidays!

Diana & Hippolyta

For my friend Karl. Pre-New 52 Wonder Woman and her Mom, Hippolyta, who in the old continuity had been the Wonder Woman of World War II. Hippolyta's outfit is my own interpretation of what she would've worn. She would've also flown an invisible Spitfire:) This work is in 4H pencil on 11x17 bristol board.

From the Vault, Part 4

...and on...But really, it's just getting started. From an unpublished stand alone Wonder Woman story that I drew a couple of years ago. It's an exciting story by Michael Jelenic---One of the most exciting scripts I've ever drawn. Inks are by Ray Snyder, and colors are by Lizzy John. They both did the best work over my pencils I've ever seen.

Drew's EMMA FROST Interview

Back in 2002 or so, I drew most of what was going to be an X-MEN: ICONS series featuring Emma Frost, The White Queen. As I was approaching the middle of the third issue, I was asked to stop work on the book when Marvel decided to set the mini-series aside in favor of an on-going EMMA FROST series. The ICONS series, written by Sean McKeever and inked by Rick Ketcham was never published, and recently, after several years, the artwork was returned to me. Our ICONS mini was a cool project. Sean had written a compelling and elegant story, and Rick's inks over my pencils were just gorgeous. I wish the book had been published, but sometimes these things happen. Ultimately, I have absolutely no complaints. I was paid for my work, and I learned a lot artistically while at work on the book. I just finished an interview with Aimee LaPlant at www.emmafrostfiles.com about the unpublished ICONS book. Here's the link if anyone might like to check it out: http://emmafrostfiles.com/behind-x-men-icons-emma-frost-drew-edward-johnson-speaks-about-the-unpublished-series/ The article includes several of my pencilled pages from the book, and a look at what might have been. Big thanks to Aimee and www.emmafrostfiles.com for giving this work a chance to be viewed. Also---Please don't forget that I'll be appearing at NUCLEAR COMICS in Laguna Niguel this saturday, May 5th from 10am-2pm for Free Comic Book day. The following Saturday, May 12th, I will be appearing at the Long Beach Comic Con's One Day Comics Expo at the Long Beach Convention Center. Please drop by one or both appearances and say Hi.

Been A While....

Finally nearing the end of the fourth issue of my upcoming creator-owned series, MIDNIGHT SOCIETY. Stay tuned for more announcements about the book as we get closer to soliciting it. I've been at work on this project for the last couple of years--Answering the question that someone might have asked somewhere at some point: "What has Drew Johnson been doing?" I really didn't leave comics to become a sheep herder in Lower Slobovia....Even though that IS a respectable profession. Just to keep some of my art work visible in the world, here's a warm up piece I drew last week. I worked on it for about an hour a day, 'til it was done. It's drawn on DC Comics cover board, so it's a little bigger than 11x17. As usual, I drew it with a ridiculously sharp pointed 4H pencil. I'll try not to be so long between blog posts next time.
